Lies travel faster than truth on the internet. Scientists studied millions of tweets and found that fake news stories spread 6 times faster than true ones. The reason? Fake news is often more surprising and emotional — and surprising things get shared more. There are also people who deliberately create false health information to sell supplements and treatments. This causes people to skip real medicine, which costs money and lives.
Vosoughi, Roy & Aral (2018, Science) studied 126,000 Twitter news cascades from 2006-2017: false news spread 6× faster, reached 1,500 people 20× faster, and was 70% more likely to be retweeted than true news. Crucially, this was primarily driven by humans, not bots — bots spread true and false news equally. The mechanism: false news was more novel and emotionally charged, triggering sharing behavior. 🤖 Bots Didn't Cause This — Humans Did
The most counterintuitive finding from Vosoughi et al.: when they removed suspected bots from the analysis, false news still spread 6× faster than true news. Bots spread both true and false news at similar rates. The virality of misinformation is a human phenomenon — we share things that surprise us, things that provoke emotional reactions, things that confirm our fears. Social media platforms' engagement algorithms reward exactly these properties. A system designed to maximize sharing will tend to maximize the spread of emotionally provocative content — which false news is, by design. The fix requires changing what platforms optimize for, not just better bots detection.
