America's pipes, bridges, and roads are old and breaking. We're not fixing them fast enough. The math says the problem gets worse every year even if we keep spending what we're spending.
The ASCE grades America's infrastructure every 4 years. The 2025 report: overall C, with Stormwater unchanged at D since 2021. Water main breaks: 240,000/year. Pipe replacement rate: 0.5%/year = 200-year replacement cycle for infrastructure that lasts 75-100 years. The backlog compounds.
ASCE letter grades are converted to numeric (D-=0.7, D=1.0, D+=1.3, C-=1.7, C=2.0, C+=2.3). The 0.5% replacement rate is a national average from AWWA State of the Water Industry report; rates vary widely by utility. The 200-year calculation: 1/0.005 = 200. This is simple arithmetic. It doesn't require assumptions. 1 ÷ 0.005 = 200. We're replacing infrastructure faster than its design life in the wrong direction.

Fern Hollow Bridge in Pittsburgh was rated "poor" for years. It collapsed on January 28, 2022. Biden was already in Pittsburgh to announce infrastructure funding when it happened. 46,000+ bridges in the US are currently rated structurally deficient. Average bridge age: 44 years. Design life: 50 years.
