Almost half of Americans have saved nothing for retirement. When they stop working, they'll depend entirely on Social Security โ which only pays about 40% of what you used to earn. This means millions of elderly Americans will face poverty. The system shifted from pensions (where companies guaranteed retirement income) to 401(k)s (where you're on your own) โ and most people can't save enough.
The shift from defined-benefit pensions (employer guarantees income for life) to defined-contribution plans (401k, IRA โ employee saves and invests) transferred retirement risk entirely to workers. Most workers either lack access (44% of private workers have no workplace retirement plan) or can't afford to contribute. Social Security's replacement rate is 40% for average earners, falling to 27% for high earners. The 401k was designed as a supplement to pensions, not a replacement. Now it's primary for those who have it, and absent for those who don't.
Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finances (2022): median retirement savings for all families: $87,000 (skewed by distribution โ 46% have zero, pushing mean up). Near-retirees (55-64): median $185,000 (those who have any savings); 30% have none. EPI analysis: retirement wealth gap is as large as income gap โ top 20% hold 72% of all retirement assets. Social Security replacement rate: SSA's "replacement rate" for medium earner born 1960 retiring at FRA: 39.6%. Medicare trust fund projected depletion: 2028 (CBO). Pension coverage: private sector DB plans: 19% โ 5% (1979-2023). Behavioral economics: auto-enrollment in 401k increases participation 80% โ 95% when made default (Thaler & Sunstein, Nudge).

The Retirement Savings Crisis by the Numbers
The 401(k) experiment promised a democratized retirement system. It delivered vast wealth for the top 20% and near-nothing for the rest.

Social Security Income vs Retirement Need by Quintile
SS replaces 40% for average earners โ far less for high earners
The Retirement Wealth Gap Is As Wide As the Income Gap
The top 20% of earners hold 72% of all US retirement assets. The bottom 40% hold less than 1%. This means the retirement crisis will create a second wealth gap โ between those who saved enough and those who didn't โ layered on top of the existing income gap. In 30 years, we will have two classes of elderly Americans: those living comfortably and those in poverty. The shift is already happening.
