Every AI model runs on computer chips. Almost all the best chips in the world are made by one company in Taiwan called TSMC. To make those chips, TSMC needs special machines made by only one company in the Netherlands called ASML. If anything happened to either company — an earthquake, a war, a factory fire — almost all the world's most powerful AI chips would stop being made.
The AI compute stack has extreme geographic and corporate concentration. TSMC in Taiwan fabricates ~90% of chips at 3nm or smaller — including Apple's M-series, NVIDIA's H100/H200, and AMD's MI300. ASML in the Netherlands makes 100% of EUV (extreme ultraviolet) lithography machines — the only way to manufacture chips at <7nm. Without ASML machines, there are no advanced chips. Without TSMC, there's no volume. The US CHIPS Act ($52B) is trying to build domestic alternatives, but Intel and TSMC's Arizona fab are 5-7 years from volume production of frontier chips.
