There are millions of jobs open and millions of people without jobs โ but they don't match. A factory might need a CNC machine operator. Someone who's been unemployed might have retail or food service experience. Neither can just switch. This is the "skills gap" โ and fixing it requires training programs, education, and investment that we're not making fast enough. Meanwhile, factories stay empty and workers stay home.
The Beveridge Curve (job vacancies vs unemployment) has shifted outward โ meaning for any given unemployment rate, there are now more vacancies than before. This structural mismatch has several causes: technology change (new jobs need new skills), geographic mismatch (jobs in one state, workers in another), credential inflation (jobs now require degrees they didn't before), and wage effects (some industries won't raise wages to attract workers). Manufacturing is hardest hit: modern factories need technicians, CNC operators, and engineers โ not the assembly line workers they laid off decades ago.
