America's tap water has a problem. Over 300,000 times since 1980, local water systems have broken the law on safe drinking water — and in 1,059 counties, the situation is worse today than Flint, Michigan was at its worst.

The EPA tracks every time a water system violates health-based standards — things like too much lead, bacteria, or chemical runoff. We scored every US county by combining violation density, poverty rate, health outcomes, and income. 1,059 counties score above the crisis threshold. Many of the worst are in the same Mississippi Delta counties.

Composite crisis score = (EPA violation density) × (county poverty rate / national avg) × (avg CDC PLACES health metric) × (inverse income). Methodology note: this blends water-quality with socioeconomic factors — a county can score high due to poverty/health without necessarily having worse water than Flint. The housing penalty figures (-11.3% lead/copper, -7.8% coliform, etc.) are from peer-reviewed studies in Journal of Housing Economics (2019) and Environmental Health Perspectives (2021). Critics: Cairo flagged the Flint framing as methodologically mixed; Fahrenthold noted the 314K total is cumulative since 1980, not annual.
