When forests burn, tiny bits of smoke float into the air and into your lungs. These bits are so small you can't see them. Breathing too many of them can make people very sick and even die. In 2023, over 33,000 people in America died earlier than they should have because of wildfire smoke.
Wildfire smoke contains PM2.5 — particles 2.5 micrometers or smaller that penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream. Research shows wildfire-sourced PM2.5 causes more cardiovascular and respiratory harm per microgram than urban PM2.5 (cars, factories). A 2023 study in The Lancet estimated 33,480 excess US deaths attributable to wildfire smoke, a figure that has grown sharply as fire seasons lengthen.
The 10Ɨ toxicity multiplier comes from Burke et al. (2022, Nature): wildfire PM2.5 has higher oxidative stress potential due to PAHs, organic carbon fractions, and fine particle composition. Excess mortality estimates use concentration-response functions applied to EPA AQS monitor data with satellite gap-fill (MAIAC AOD). The 33,480 figure (2023) is from Stanford EPI group analysis using ICD-cause-of-death attribution. Western states bear ~65% of exposure burden. Climate projections show wildfire smoke days increasing 3-4Ɨ by 2050 in the western US under RCP 8.5.

🫁 Why Wildfire Smoke Is Different

Wildfire smoke isn't just regular air pollution. It contains a toxic mix of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), heavy metals from burning homes, and ultrafine particles that penetrate the blood-brain barrier. Multiple studies show it triggers cardiovascular events — heart attacks, strokes — at lower concentrations than industrial PM2.5. When you see "Air Quality Unhealthy" on a smoke day, the actual risk is 10Ɨ worse than that same AQI rating from car exhaust.
